Biomaterials

At Clínica Dental Asensio, as well as having the most advanced equipment and a team of people trained to be at the forefront in the use of new techniques, we use the latest generation of materials.

What is a biomaterial?

A Biomaterial is a material created to integrate seamlessly into a biological system. Dental restorative biomaterials are used in dentistry as amalgams, composites, prosthetic alloys, dental porcelain, dental cements and impression materials, among many others. They are also used in structural implants, including dental implants, joint replacements and maxillofacial prostheses.

What are the characteristics of a biomaterial?

Biomaterials must be biocompatible: those that have little or no influence on surrounding living tissues are called bioinert, while those that can bind to living bone tissues are called bioactive. Biomaterials can be of artificial origin(metals, ceramics, polymers) or biological origin(collagen, chitin, etc.).

Classification of biomaterials

Depending on the nature of the artificial material from which an implant is manufactured, a classification can be made into ceramic, metallic, polymeric or composite materials.

Polymeric biomaterials:

are widely used, whether in surgical implants, protective membranes, drug delivery systems or acrylic bone cements.

Metallic biomaterials:

are used where load-bearing is essential, e.g. in hip replacements, for which alloys of cobalt (Co) with chromium (Cr) or titanium (Ti) with aluminium (Al) and vanadium (V) are used; titanium is also used in dental implants.

Ceramic biomaterials:

are used in the manufacture of non-load-bearing implants, such as in middle ear surgery, in the filling of bone defects in both oral surgery and orthopaedic surgery, and in the coating of dental implants and metal joints.
